The fishing was good in Martin Lake, although the size was small you could get a strike on almost every cast.

Wading in Martin Lake

The guys had a good time wading in the shallow lake. Including a few mud fights.

Andrew on Eagle Lakes Trail

I had forgotten my medicines so Andrew and I hiked out on the 2nd day and drove home. We drove back the next day and hiked into lower Eagle Lake. Andrew and I stayed here on his first long backpacking trip in 1991.

Andrew - Camp at 1st Eagle Lake

We've stayed many times at lower Eagle Lake. The fishing is a little better than at Upper Eagle and it is less crowded as well. In order to lessen impact on the lake by motorcycles the old trail which first went to lower Eagle was replaced by a new superhighway that goes to Upper Eagle first and then to get to lower Eagle you have to come back down the old trail. This is easily circumvented by hikers if they find where the debris that was placed on the old trail. These obstacles can be climbed over and the old trail followed down to the lake.

Trail above lower Eagle Lake

The old trail winds around the north side of Lower Eagle Lake ,the best camps are at the outlet (eastern end), and then climbs steeply to meet the main trail a couple of hundred yards beyond the cutoff trail to Upper Eagle lake. This is a scenic stretch and one which Andrew and I will never forget as we saw a dead horse by the side of the trail on our first trip here in 1991.
